Since we’re all more aware of handwashing and sanitizing, I thought that this post would be very convenient, given everybody’s current situation. I’ve definitely had always been OCD about keeping things clean and sanitized. I am going to give you 13 steps to prevent contamination and keeping your makeup germ-free guaranteed! Check them out down below. Stay safe everyone!
13 tips to keep your makeup germ-free!
- Throw out expired makeup // Did you know that all makeup products include a small image of how long the product is good for? I will be real with you. It took maybe until 2015 of me realizing this. Mind you, I had just started to explore with makeup during that time period. It was mind-blowing to know that all this time on the other side of the makeup product it will show “3M, 6M, 12M, 24M, 36M” to show how long in “months” it will be good for. It’s definitely good to know. Would you use anything that is expired? I didn’t think so. It’s definitely self-explanatory on why you shouldn’t use makeup past the date it recommends.
2. Sharpen eye and lip pencils // This will ensure each time you are applying it there won’t be any prior existing bacteria on it. So before you apply your lip liner or eyeliner, sharpen them first.
3. Keep your makeup in room temperature // Never keep your makeup in a hot car. Not only does it ruin the product but it accelerates the expiration date. There was one time I had left lotion in my hot car and applied it on my skin. My skin had a reaction to it. Never did I leave any beauty items in my car, again.
4. Start your makeup with a clean/fresh face // After your skincare routine, start your makeup. That way any germs that were on your face are now gone.
5. Clean your makeup tools TWICE a month // By using antibacterial and drying alcohol-based properties. Clean tools prevent breakouts and bacteria from spreading.
6. Use makeup for its intended purpose // I’ve seen people get creative with lipsticks, using it as an eyeshadow blended out to a beautiful color. I get that. But, a lipstick is supposed to be for your lips.
7. Sanitize your makeup station often // This goes for your counters, vanity area, vanity chair, mirrors, etc. We all know sanitizing prevents germs from spreading and keeps existing germs. Keep your makeup space clean at all times.
8. Never share your makeup // Just like when we were kids. We were told not to shares hairbrushes, deodorants, and clothing because we could catch lice or anything else for that matter. If you share, let’s just say…mascara/eyeliner. You could catch a stye or pink eye. I’ve seen it happened more. Just don’t share makeup.
9. Dry your makeup brushes downwards // Heres a link on how to properly dry makeup brushes. It’s important to dry your makeup brushes properly so that you don’t allow bacteria to grow. Wet things end up attracting bacteria. You don’t want that for your makeup brushes. Here is a link to my other post on how I dry my makeup quickly and effectively to prevent bacteria from growing.
10. Wipe off the top layer of lipstick if it hasn’t been used in weeks // Just like sharpening your pencils, this helps to get off the bacteria on the top layer.
11. Avoid using makeup testers // I’m guilty of this. Can you imagine other people putting their unwashed fingers onto an eyeshadow palette tester and you stick your fingers in the same exact tester? Do you think that’s hygienic? Absolutely not. You should have the beauty consultant apply it on you or use a Q-tip to apply testers onto your face.
12. Throw out makeup bags with spilled beauty products // Bacteria can grow easily. Some people use inexpensive bags and throw them out every 6 months. I use a clear plastic construction material where all I have to do is easily wipe it with a makeup remover if any makeup spills. I’ve attached some cute recommended makeup bags down below to shop at your convenience.
13. Most Importantly, WASH YOUR HANDS // This goes before you apply makeup and after you’re done!
Hope this post will be helpful for you. Stay safe, much love guys!
