If you’re a blogger, influencer, or just someone who loves capturing photos of your favorite items, you probably understand the pressure of taking flat lay pictures. It seems easy to create a flat lay picture for most creative individuals out there, but if you’re struggling with ideas – I got you covered! I’ve definitely been there before. That’s why once I learned to create beautiful flat lay photos, I wanted to make sure I made it a mission to share with others on what tips worked for me! Enjoy!
8 ways to create a beauty flat-lay!
- Use a high-quality camera/phone // This is obviously a given and I am sure you can understand why this is important. High definition photos really make a difference!
- Pick items that match your theme // If you’re someone who takes flat lay photos for your Instagram feed, then this one is for you! Choose props that match your color scheme. It will blend in perfectly with your feed and become more eye-catching to your followers.
- Choose several props unrelated to beauty niche // This really adds character to the flat lay. I normally choose 2-3 props unrelated to beauty such as fashionable hats, glasses, and/or lifestyle-related things. I don’t know hoHere are some examples;
- Fashion // Some examples would be necklaces, rings, watches, hair accessories, sunglasses, and many more. I like to include staple items that I am obsessed with. It helps add more of a personal touch to the photo.
- Home goods // Such as candles, plants, incenses, etc.
- Misc. // Coffee cup and stationery items. If you have ribbons? USE THEM! Do you have plants around the house? Utilize them!
- Choose a background that is non-distracting // Backgrounds makes your items pop, only when it is a solid/neutral tone background. If you like patterns, go with white/neutral marble tone pattern. (as seen down below).
- Display items creatively // This is when your creative skills come in. Here are some ideas on where you can lay your beauty products on;
- Fur rug
- Luxury throw blanket
- Chic metal/rustic/farmhouse containers
- Adhesive stickers
- A sweater (I like to display mines on a knitted sweater)
- Decorative tray
- Start an Inspirational board // This is as easy as creating a Pinterest board full of flay lay photos you would like to recreate. Finding photos to recreate as inspiration and motivation to make your own photos. We all go through moments where we need to make content but can’t connect with our creative side and that’s why inspirational boards come in handy.
- Take lots and I mean LOTS of photos // Try different angles, move things around, make sure your lighting is on point. Take enough photos so you will have PLENTY to choose from!
- Utilize presets/filters // Presets and filters really give your photos a professional look. I’ve bought a few presets off of Etsy for under $10 and applied it to all of my images-including flat lay photos! It was definitely worth it.
It’s definitely a lot easier than it seems! I hope you are able to gain something from this post. Until the next post!
